Jim's been a client too. In the early 90s, he worked at Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc. as in-house Environmental Counsel. He hired lawyers from outside firms, monitored their work, and paid their bills. After he left the company, his experience as The Client helped Jim become a better lawyer to his own clients. It helped him understand their needs (and not just the legal needs) better. It made him focus on solutions rather than on legal questions.
